729th edition of the Celestinian Pardon

The celebration was instituted by Pope Celestine V in 1294 with the issuing of the papal Bull Inter sanctorum solemnia (also known as the Bull of Forgiveness), with which he granted plenary indulgence to anyone who had confessed and communicated and entered the basilica of Santa Maria of Collemaggio from the vespers of August 28 to those of 29. The event, which in 2022 celebrates its 728th edition, is therefore a precursor of the universal Jubilee of the Catholic Church established by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300 and has been accompanied over time by numerous other civic and historical events, which take place throughout the last week of August, the Perdonanza Celestiniana, a UNESCO intangible heritage since 2019 as the only holy door in the world.
